Boruto begins with a flashback, something that the original series did not often. We see a glimpse of a devastated Konoha in this flashback, which is similar to the devastation Pain caused. Kawaki, a man, is fighting Boruto. His adversary asserts that the ninja lifestyle is over and that technology-infused powers and abilities were going to be the next big thing. More importantly, he also says that he killed Naruto, despite our lack of understanding of how or why. Boruto uses his Bakugan, but only in one eye, something I've never seen with a Bakugan before. He takes on this new foe, who appears to have technology-infused powers.
The fact that Boruto shares some characteristics with Kawaki, which appear to boost him, is one of the most important aspects of this new future. He also has a scar over his Bakugan eye, and the well-known slash that cuts through the hidden leaf symbol is on his headband. The slash that runs through the symbol suggests that Boruto once acted erratically. Interesting.
The Fourth Great Shinobi War was about ten years ago, so we jump to the present. Boruto and Shikadai, his friend, are bravely (and potentially dangerously) jumping on a moving train to get a limited-edition hamburger. While Shikadai, who has been enlisted by Hinata, is there to prevent his friend from getting into too much trouble, Boruto appears to be the one who started the trouble. We learn that Boruto and Shikadai's first day at ninja academy is tomorrow, but the school has changed slightly; It now also offers academic courses.
After their brief excursion, they part ways, and Boruto returns home. But on his way home, he sees a child being bullied and cornered. Boruto steps in and helps save the child. Denki Kaminarimon is the little one. Denki's father is in charge of the powerful and wealthy tech company known as Kaminarimon. Denki's father wants him to go to a ninja academy to learn ninjutsu and academics so he can inherit the business, but that is not always what he wants. Denki is a shy boy who is easily bullied. However, after Boruto gets him to stand up to his father and get what he wants, Denki becomes more confident.
Naturally, Boruto is running late for the ninja academy's opening ceremony the following day for all new students. He decides to take the train to get to the academy faster while he is on his way there. He observes the snake-controlled Denki making his way to the train as he waits for it. He sees the snake in Denki with his one-eyed Bakugan, so he knows something is wrong. Boruto comes after Denki.
With money in hand, the three bullies are led onto a train, but all but Denki's car are empty. Boruto comes next. The train's design is flawed and belongs to Denki's father's business. The train is being driven by nobody. Boruto follows. He tries to stop the snake-controlled Denki because he is aware that something is wrong. At that point, he realizes that Denki has conned them into getting on a train that is about to hit another train.
As he tries to control the snake, Denki moves in and out of it. Boruto climbs atop the train and employs his shadow clone jutsu to change the train's tracks and steer it away from a collision course. While holding his other clones, he begins to fall. They hit the switch and changed the tracks, but Denki quickly grabbed Boruto and saved him from certain death. The bullies intervene when it appears that Denki and Boruto are about to fall out of the window, assisting in their rescue.
But the adventure isn't over yet because their caboose is falling apart and the train is indeed broken. The bullies get into the next train car when their car breaks free from the others. Denki and Boruto, on the other hand, continue to ride in the broken vehicle as it whirls along the railroad tracks toward the academy. The car deviates from the tracks and ascends, landing directly on Naruto's stone face on the Hokage memorial.
To Naruto's surprise, Boruto and Denki made a big entrance at the Academy's opening ceremony. Boruto seems to already have a name, but it might not be the one he really wants. He has at least made a new friend with whom he can begin the academy (once his suspension is over).
I enjoyed this episode, and I'm eager to see what comes next and the path that leads to the beginning's flash forward.
